The young British language teacher killed in Japan sent a message to her boyfriend just before she disappeared – telling him how she was chased home by a man.
The body of Lindsay Hawker was found buried in a bathtub filled with sand on Monday, six days after she sent the message.
Miss Hawker, 22, was last seen on Saturday night and was reported missing by a flatmate after she failed to answer her phone.
Lovely girl, too.
She had suffered severe injuries to her face and arms and police found her clothes and identification strewn across the flat.
Superintendent Yoshihiro Sugita, of the Chiba Prefectural Police, said: “There was no sign of strangulation, and no sign that the body had been stabbed, but there were signs of violent assault – bruises on the face and in numerous places all over the body.
Lindsay Ann Hawker, 22, from Brandon near Coventry, had been teaching English in Japan for the past five months. Police in Japan have issued an arrest warrant for a 28-year-old Japanese man.
At Miss Hawker’s family home in Warwickshire, friends and wellwishers – many in tears – have been delivering flowers and tributes since her death was announced.
She attended King Henry VIII’s School in Coventry.
I thought Japanese society was heavily regulated and crime is practically nil there as a result. Interesting that another British girl, Lucie Blackman disappeared in Tokyo in 2000. She was a 21-year-old British nightclub hostess whose dismembered body was found in a cave.
Japanese people’s reaction to this mishap came up to my reactions. Just as was expected, Japanese people didn’t fail to go into action at many websites in order to distort the true nature of the murder case. Is the kernel of a question Lindsay Ann Hawker’s illegal private lessons? Any victimized person himself/herself is more responsible for his/her own death than a murderer just because of illegal tutorage outside of an employed English school? The core of the case is that she had been stalked and was brutally murdered by a man. Japanese people should not try to attract public gaze at something else. They’d better express their condolences to the deceased, help the Japanese authorities to cooperate with the British authorities in handling this murder case. They should know their distortion of the matter will do no good to anything, even to their UJP (Ultra Japan Pride). Do you remember when an American Lucie Blackman was killed by a Japanese man in Japan? At that time, the Japanese mass media concentrated only on her being a bar hostess and her mental anxiety.
It’s a moral inversion which elevates Japanese stalkers and murderers over female British victims; these two in particular, unfortunate recipients of the most horrible kind of cruelty known to man. So let’s get back on the Hawkins topic since you moved far away from it blaming Koreans for Japanese sickness of beating and murdering this woman before burying her in a bathtub full of sand. As I recall from the news reports, the young Japanese fellow who murderered her is Japanese (not Korean), and is, in fact, the son of a rich Japanese doctor, is that correct?
Firstly, Causal Nexus, you seem to be under the false impression that Japanese persons are capable of conversing. Second, this persona is not blaming Koreans for Japanese who beat and murdered her, but for bringing her into the country to be susceptible to it. It was their responsibility as her employer to ensure the investigation and such.
Note also, that Koreans are a different species to this stranger. Even if they are naturalized as Japanese, Japanese natives, or Japanese citizens they will always be Korean. Is this really how Japanese society works? One analysis I read considered there to be more class mobility in Japan. This perspective acknowledges it but says it is not respected within Japanese society, seen as a shady business.
The equation of Koreans with Jews is also quite interesting. If this line of thinking is widespread in Japan, then almost anyone in Japan might be accused of being Korean just as people with little link to Judaism were accused of being Jews. Let us hope that Japanese fellow and his Japanese world get an English lesson they can remember. But then I remember Tienamen Square in China, how it was not recalled even after a year, and think this is not the appropriate opportunity even for that.
This is a sad story and as a fellow educator in Japan my thoughts go out to her family and friends. However, I do believe there is more to come out about this story. I have talked about it in my blog article and made comments on a couple of details that have been mentioned by the media, but not questioned or investigated by reporters as of yet.
The BBC has already put a story online entitled “Is Japan safe for foregners?”. You don’t have to read the article as I can give you an answer here. Yes it is! It’s most likely safer than your home country (unless you live in Iceland or Scandinavia somewhere). Sure there is crime, but there is crime everywhere. I have never once felt threatened walking around in Japan, unlike numerous times back in England.

Even if Lindsay Hawker and Lucie Blackman are rare cases, it would seem that for a young single british girl alone, safety is not paramount in Japan., Dave.
This reminds me of the unfortunate disappearance of that beautiful young American girl, Natalee Halloway, in Aruba.
But in that case, then no country in the world can be classed as being “safe” for people, as there will unfortunately always be incidents like this.
Perhaps parents should be looking after their children better; even if they’re young adults – and be wary of their galavanting about in another country…young people are very trusting, and unfortunately there are bad people in the world who seek to do bad things.
